Stritch Recognized as one of the Top 50 Catholic High Schools in the Nation for Second Consecutive Year

Cardinal Stritch High School has earned the designation as one of the top 50 Catholic high schools in the United States for the second consecutive year by the Catholic High School Honor Roll. In addition to being recognized in the top 50, Stritch was also recognized to be in the top 25 nationally in the area of Catholic Identity.

"Cardinal Stritch High School has been educating disciples and stewards for 46 years. We are grateful to the National Catholic Honor Roll for their recognition of our mission and work,” states Father David Reinhart, president of Stritch. “The focus of our school is to create disciples and stewards. We do this by surrounding our students with teachers, coaches, and staff members who are disciples and stewards.”

Timothy Mahoney, principal of Cardinal Stritch High School was first to be notified about the award. “Being selected to the top 50 last year was quite an honor; however, our selection this year is even more meaningful since the number of schools applying to the Honor Roll increases every year, making the competition even more intense. This year only two schools in the state of Ohio were selected to the Honor Roll’s Top 50, Tiffin Calvert and ourselves. I think this says quite a bit about the success and quality of education of the small, Catholic high school in the Diocese of Toledo.”

“I am equally excited that once again we were also selected as one of the top 25 schools in the category of Catholic Identity. After all we are not just here to educate students. There are many schools, including public ones, that do an excellent job of educating students, we feel our primary responsibility at Cardinal Stritch High School is to create disciples.”

“Like last year I feel our selection as one of the top 50 Catholic High Schools in the nation is a direct reflection on our staffs’ dedication, our parents’ commitment and our students’ desire to learn and serve,” according to Mahoney. “Since the award is based on academics, Catholic identity and civic education, it is not just a reflection of academic excellence, but of our drive to create true stewards who live the teachings of the Catholic church everyday, both in their parishes and the larger community.”

There will be a special assembly held at 2:15 PM in the school’s gymnasium on Wednesday, October 17th to honor the achievement. All faculty, staff, students, and community dignitaries will be present.

The Honor Roll is produced in consultation with a national advisory board comprised of Catholic college presidents and noted Catholic scholars.  Advisory board member Rev. John Schlegel, President of Creighton University, said the Honor Roll is significant for Catholic education.  “Catholic High schools that excel at forming students in the faith and at teaching them to think critically and act virtuously are a great asset to the Church,” he said. “Not only do these schools deserve to be recognized, but they should also be imitated by all Catholic schools.”

All of America’s nearly 1,300 Catholic high schools were invited to apply to the Honor Roll by completing three detailed surveys, indicating that inclusion in the Honor Roll requires exceptional merit in each of the areas measured. This balanced approach assesses a school’s adherence to the Church’s educational calling, where the best schools offer more than the strong academic preparation Catholic education is known for.  Rather, the best schools also have vibrant Catholic identities and offer sound civic training that help prepare students to live their faith in the world.
About The Catholic High School Honor Roll

The Honor Roll is an annual list of the top 50 Catholic high schools in the United States, where schools are examined on the criteria of academic excellence, Catholic identity, and civic education. The Honor Roll is a powerful resource for parents and a great opportunity for schools to receive much deserved recognition.

The primary goal of the Honor Roll is to encourage schools to educate students as effectively as possible, in a way that integrates Catholic faith and prepares students for active engagement with the world. As a constructive competition, the Honor Roll provides insight into the character of Catholic secondary education and calls everyone to improve the academic and spiritual formation given to America’s youth. In promoting rigorous education, the Honor Roll desires to better prepare students for fruitful vocations in politics, business, and the Church.

The Catholic High School Honor Roll is an independent project of the Acton Institute, an international research and educational organization. For more on Acton, please go to www.acton.org.
